Take Away My Phone, MY Sports but Not The Support Children Need

Writer: Mae MontgomeryMae Montgomery

The Walkout is important for EVERY student of ANY capability. I have been looking at what people have been posting but forgot one huge issue about our education changes. How the Special Needs children will be impacted. Children with Autism will strongly be impacted by these change as they announced a new Autism program . Basically what the government is doing is putting children with complex needs into classrooms full-time, without the proper support. Some students with Autism can't go to school every day and some only go one day a week. When they aren't in school most do intensive therapy in private or community based settings. From this new program, Families will only receive a fraction of financial support of what they used to get which was full funding. This will make it extremely difficult for families to get the resources they need for their child. The cuts on the financial support will force parents to put there child into school more or even full time. A child who usually goes one day a week to school will now transition to five. People with special needs need routines and if a routine is off or changed they get thrown off. For transitioning into new routines you have to do it slowly and it takes time. These children can't go from being at school for 1 day to all the time, which is what the government is planning to do without any transitional support or plan. It is also not known if there will be government funds for supporting staff. This means a child that needs one to one support or more support won't get it. Instead the only support they will have is there teacher who has many other students to take care of also. The government is taking away support a child needs for them to be successful in school and learning. Unless these children have one to one help at school to help them with learning, communicating, being around the other children, it's going to be terrifying for them and an awful experience that isn't right. With the increased class sizes these children will also have less of a chance of support from the teacher as their are so many students. This walk needs to represent ALL students of ALL abilities and is a very huge deal. It's not about skipping class, it's about making a change for us and people who need help standing up for it. Take away my phone, take away my sports, I don't care I don't need them like the special need students need their support in order to develop and thrive.
