People with special needs just want to be treated and accepted by everyone, like all of us do. Here are ten easy things you can do to put a smile on their faces in School or in the World!
1. Say Hi to them and introduce yourself!
They love making new friends and being social! Acknowledging them will make their day so much better and will feel much joy!
2. Be Positive
If you see one of them having a bad day try to encourage them that everything will be better and they can do it. Sometimes its very hard for them to face the challenges they do everyday and get frustrated like the rest of us. They just need some positivity and support!
3. Help
Everyone needs help at some point in their lives but are too afraid to ask for it. If you see someone with special needs struggling with tasks like how to count their money at Tim Hortons. Show a helping hand and ask if they need assistance!
4. Avoid showing Pity or being Patronizing
They just want to be treated like anyone else! Don't talk down to them or pat them on the head. Talk to them like you would anyone else.
5. Being Kind
Sometimes people with special needs try to reach out and want to make new friends. They may want to do things like eat lunch with you or just have a conversation with them! Reach out and make them feel they are welcomed , accept them and don't ignore them!
6. Join Best Buddies
Many schools have programs where you can be a best buddy where you do activities and interact with them. They really love this club and this is a good chance for them to meet new friends throughout the school.
7. Raise Awareness
When it is a particular day like Epilepsy Day show your support by posting things on social media or wearing a certain colour!
8. Participate in Events to help raise money
They're are many events around your community like runs, showcases, and so much more to help raise money for different causes that go towards helping people with special needs!
9. Volunteering
In your community their are many volunteer opportunities to help people with special needs, but many are short volunteers. Help out as many of these organizations really benefit them and are activities they can do like horseback riding and skiing. It is also a great way for high school students to get volunteer hours!
10. Use The Golden Rule
Treat everyone as you would like to be treated. Don't ignore or try to avoid people with disabilities, think of the person first not their disability.
